dance yr 14

I will be creating a dance on bird migration where i will be focusing on penguins pecifically rockhopper penguins  from the a2 aqa dance paper  I shall also be using the style of Jiri Kylian also from the a2 dance exam paper below have included research and past performance anylsis .

I will use choreographic tools to translate ideas into dance material. To create my dance i have done this by using research of the penguins form videos on youtube and other dance works

• i  will try to reveal a competent understanding of choreographic and structuring
devices in relation to group choreography, which  should result in a  coherent piece of work.  I will also be  imaginative and original with my use  of the aural setting which i have kept to minimum as i want the dancers to have the spotlight/focus. I prefere simplicity it also  allows the dancer to express the meaning of the dance  as they now know from research and there own creative tasks how a peguin would interact with others .

The tasks i have gave my dancers 1)  coming up with bars of eight of dance cheoreograph from  a stimulus ( of a picture see below)  2) a gave  them a task  to create tableuxs/ freeze frames of a penguin scenes that could be used in the dance  3)  I  sent them to watch videos on youtube 4)  to look  at more  pictures of how they act and move see below video this took the dance to a prefromance.

• by the dancers creating sections  and playing with my choreography it allowed me to explore the dancers attributes and adapt it to their styles.

the penguin informormation is my research for both charecterisation and cotume

costume ideas

for my dance research and material exploration

The rockhopper penguins are three closly related species . . people say  these three  penguins are completly different , but  split the Western and Eastern forms into the Southern Rockhopper Penguin and keeping the Northern Rockhopper as distinct, while other experts lump all 3 calling it simply Rockhopper Penguin.

after deciding i was going to do penguin migration i researched the characterizations i wanted my dance to tell a story i wanted my dancers to look at videos of penguins and to come up with there own sections of counts so they could bring there own personality's to the piece.

Work

He joined the Stuttgart Ballet in 1968 and worked under John Cranko, where he began to work as a choreographer.[3] Kylián became Artistic Director of Nederlands Dans Theaterin 1976. His best known works include Symphony of Psalms (1978). His style include exploring the limitations and capabilities of space, body parts, entrances and exits, contrasts, and humor.
In 1992, he started his own chamber company for dancers over 40.[4]
Kylián's main works include:

Forgotten Land (1981)[edit]

Forgotten Land 1981 explores memories, events and people that over time are lost or forgotten and how people sometimes vainly try to recover them, or a sense of them in order to regain their former power and value. The work itself is inspired and based on a painting of women on a beach by the Norwegian Expressionist painter Edvard Munch. The work mainly involves duets who move their arms in various stretched positions, as if they were reaching out for something. The dancers arch their backs and dance expressively, reflecting both the music and the haunting painting that influenced the work. Kylián makes a statement of lost homelands, lost lovers and lost times and there are also duets that reflect violent moods. These duets end up as a large ensemble and then the women are left on the shore, stretching their arms again like birds that cannot fly.

Falling Angels (1989)[edit]

Falling Angels is a part of the Black and White ballets, which were created in 1989 with 8 white female dancers dressed in black leotards. It was performed to drumming/percussion music based on ceremonial ritual music from Ghana (West Africa). Musical rhythms and patterns are used and mixed in a synthesizer to produce a layered effect in some sections. The result of this a more energetic, sometimes frenzied sound that the dancers match in a very physical dance.
Falling Angels depicts females and female dancers in their aim to achieve perfection but succumb in various stages to the human female psyche and female events such as ambition, seduction, pregnancy, birth, death, motherhood and self-awareness. It is about the things that pull and push a dancer from the 'purity' of dance and performance. Kylián was influenced by surrealism and minimalism during the creation of this work and the 'black and white ballets'. In this ballet we see the combination of classical lines and sharp percussive movements that give unpredictability to the piece as a whole.

Petite Mort (1991)[edit]

Petite Mort was composed for the 1991 Salzburg Festival on the second centenary of Mozart's death with six men, six women, and six foils. Assistant choreographer was Roslyn Anderson, costumes by Joke Visser, and music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart included Piano Concerto in A Major – Adagio and Piano Concerto in C Major – Andante.

Solo dance on Jiri  Kylian

Final Performance

on the day I  was incredibly  nervous, however i feel my dance routine went well .I  felt like i stayed with the rythem  and my musicalty was good . I  made the dance more playful and i seemed to   relax wich i had never done so  during the dance.  I  came out of the performance really happy and enjoying it

what i could have done better - i think i could have changed a couple of the movements i felt challenging however i really enjoyed theses moves so i thought it  would be best to keep them in specialy so close to the performance. i think if i had had more ballet lessons it would    have improved my technique and stamina for the perfromance. also i think if i had rehersed the dance more my endurence would have been better and my perfromance would have stayed energised through out.

what went well
i think my performance was confident and playful i dont think   i  let my energy drop and with the jumps i hit the right beat so all in all i think that its the best performance i have done so far.

Duration of dance 2 mins 40
Title of music  - Cold Music
Name(s) of musician(s)  Aim
Name(s) of dancer(s) – Emily Partner , Emily Green, Abi  Powel l, Aaliyah Davison, Sophie Sheppard
Title of Dance – The Rockhoppers
Candidate’s name –Megan Ring
Candidate  number -8209
College – Worthing college

Programme note - My dance is based on  Rockhopper penguins from the Falklands and how they migrate north west to the Patagonian shelf.   This is shown in my dance through repetition  and  having the dancers exiting north west throughout the piece.
My dance is in narrative form as it tells the tale of a family of penguins and their journey to find food for  the cold months of winter.
Choreographically I have used the  characterisations of penguins. For example,  clumsy waddling and bouncy movements ,  as this is how Rockhopper penguins travel.
I have chosen music with cold undertones to contextualise the penguins environment.

Mock exam

today we had a practise for our exam where we had to come in one by one and perform  our jiri kylian routine.
what i did well : i rememebered the routine well and was mostly in time i acturatly used my body to perfrom the dance i used a range of dynamics for ecample slow then fast movemnts with the dance i was also focused with the dance and stayed in role when i made a light error.
what went wrong : i made a slight mistake but managed to cover it up and i also nearly forgot the choreography.
what i need to improve for my exam:
i need to keep my energy levels up thoughout the dance and my teacher told me they lagged towsrds the end to change this i need to keep doing the dance to build up stamina.I also  need to stop worrying about the moves and peform this dance it  is fun and quitky so i need to show this in my facial expressions and play with the movements a bit more i think im going to look at clowning and mining to see how they move and there facial reactions. i need to be more playful with it and confident. i also need to make sure i use my neck and vertibrate as i curl up leaving my head for last this important one it looks nicer and two it protects my neck from injury

i am going to apply  performance skills to a specific practitioner aka jiri  kylian  i will demonstarate
a comprehensive understanding of safe practice and the
appropriate technical and expressive skills
needed in solo presentation.
This will be evident in the:
• accurate and articulate use of  my bodily skill in
relation to Jiri Kylian style
i will have  control of the  space (personal
and stage space) in relation to Jiri Kylian
i will also use a range  of dynamics in relation
to jiri kylian aswell  i will also  use informeed use of focus and projection to comunicate the dance idea in realtion to jiri kylian .

• The performance is presented in a sophisticated
and highly polished, elegant way, clearly
demonstrating an understanding of the specific
genre and style Jiri Kylian
