research on three songs
"For Good" is a musical number from the hit musical Wicked. It is sung as a duetbetween Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda, as a farewell to each other. The song's music and lyrics were written by composer Stephen Schwartz.
Context [edit]
The song is performed towards the end of the musical. In it, the two are singing farewell to one another. Just prior to the song, Elphaba gives Glinda the Grimmerie and tells her that it is now up to her to continue Elphaba's cause. After this song, Elphaba leaves and is supposedly melted by Dorothy (it later turns out that this was an elaborate set-up to fool the citizens of Oz into thinking she was dead so they would stop hunting her). In the end, she and Fiyero, turned into "The Scarecrow" by one of Elphaba's spells gone awry, run away together.
It is the climax, and one of the most well-known songs of the show. It is reprised as part of the show's finale.
Lyrics [edit]
The song's lyrics concern how both Elphaba and Glinda have been changed by their friendship with each other. Glinda starts out by saying that, while she doesn't know if it is true that people come into each other's lives for a reason, "I know I'm who I am today because I knew you." Similarly, Elphaba tells Glinda that "whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend." Elphaba also asks Glinda to forgive her for anything she might have done wrong, to which Glinda replies that "there's blame to share", but both agree that "none of it seems to matter anymore." Schwartz said after the show premiered that to begin the song, he asked his daughter what she would say if she would never see her best friend again, and her answer became the first verse of "For Good".[citation needed]
The lyrics rely on the play of words, "for good," which are used to signify alternatively "forever" and "as an improvement."
Another Suitcase in Another Hall" is a song from the musical Evita with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The song was first a hit in the UK for Barbara Dickson in 1977. The B-side was the "Requiem for Evita", which had a slightly strange ending as it did not have "Oh What a Circus" to segue into.Composition [edit]
The lyrics describe the singer's familiarity with the unhappiness of having to move on after a failed romance. In the stage musical, the song is sung by Juan Perón's mistress after she is pushed out of Perón's life by his future wife, Eva. In the film adaptation of Evita, the song is adapted for Eva to sing after the end of her relationship with Agustín Magaldi, adding a more vulnerable dimension to the character and another potential Madonna hit to aid the film's promotion.
American singer-songwriter Madonna released the song as the third and final single from the 1996 soundtrack Evita. It was released March 24, 1997 by Warner Bros. Records and was only available in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and a small number of Europeancountries. The arrangement was altered significantly for Madonna's version of the song. The piece was transposed down from the original key of B Major to A-flat Major and an instrumental break added.
"You Must Love Me" is a pop ballad recorded by American singer-songwriter Madonnafrom the soundtrack album Evita of the motion picture of the same name.[1] It was released in October 1996 by Warner Bros. as the first single from the album. Written byTim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, the song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1997.[1] It was seen by critics as her "new adult, matriarchal image".[2]
The track is the only song recorded for the movie that did not originate in one form or another from the original stage version of the musical. The song reunited lyricistTim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber after eleven years of not working together on any new songs. It was written specifically for the film (the director Alan Parker requested a rewrite of parts of the final scenes of the score) and was included in the stage production for the first time when the musical was staged in Iceland in 1997 and subsequently in many other productions, including the English language revival, starring Elena Roger, in June 2006 at London's Adelphi Theatre.
Featuring a simple, elegantly arranged melody, the single sold roughly 1.5 million copies worldwide, and entered the top twenty in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. The music video shows her while being eight months pregnant with her first child, and scenes from the film Evita, for which she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Music
The song speaks on two levels: First, the literal level of Eva Perón's discovery that her husband Juan Perón has actually loved her all along and not merely seen her as a political prop. Second, in a more political level, as Eva Perón talking to her people, notably represented in the musical by the character of Che. The B-side to the single was "Rainbow High".
Brooke White covered this song on the seventh season of American Idol, during Andrew Lloyd Webber week. She marked Idol history that night when she stopped after the first verse in the song to restart because she forgot the lyrics.
